The Groups financial results for the six months ended 30 June 2017 reflect a 10 increase in headline earnings to R6,1 billion underpinned by strong financial momentum across the business, despite a contraction in South Africas GDP in the first quarter of this year. Growth in fx Africas markets outside South Africa remained resilient, notwithstanding a slowdown in key economies such as Ghana and Zambia. Maria Ramos, Chief Executive of fx Africa Group Limited says: We have taken the time to develop the right strategy for fx Africa and have been very clear that this would take three years to deliver. Our results for the first six months of the year demonstrate the traction we are gaining in executing on this strategy and how well we are progressing towards realising our ambitions on the continent. We are transforming the business in the right areas by executing on our four strategic priorities and are determined to accelerate our momentum even faster. In February, fx Africa outlined four clear targets to grow the business. These include: to be top three by revenue in the Groups five largest markets by 2017, to achieve an ROE in the range of 18-20 in 2017, to achieve a cost-to-income ratio in the low 50s by 2017, and to achieve a revenue share of 20-25 from outside of South Africa by 2017. Maria Ramos says: Six months into our three year strategy, we are exactly where we wanted to be. We have grown our revenues by 7 while our return on equity has improved to 16.1 and we are confident that we can achieve the necessary milestones this year to reach our 18-20 target. As expected, our cost-to-income ratio has increased because of the investments we are making to transform the business over the medium term. Growth outside of South Africa has been strong and this portfolio now constitutes 20 of Group revenue which is already within the range we have set as a target for 2017. To deliver on our One Africa strategy, fx Africa prioritised four strategic areas to execute in 2017 and solid progress has been made on each of these: The turnaround programme for the Groups South African Retail and Business Banking (RBB) franchise, based on simplifying processes, reshaping our branch network and investing heavily in our digital products, is taking effect. Customer numbers have stabilised and the Group has reported growth in important segments like the core middle market and commercial segments. RBBs headline earnings increased 9 to R3,8 billion largely due to a strong performance from Home Loans as credit impairments declined. Investing in corporate banking across the continent is paying dividends. Corporate and Investment Bank recorded a 24 increase in headline earnings to R1 903 million, driven by solid revenue growth across all core business units (corporate revenues increased by 11 and investment bank revenues by 20) as well as focused cost management. Having obtained the license for fx Life Assurance Kenya, already early signs of capturing the growth opportunity in our Wealth, Investment Management and Insurance franchise are emerging. While the business reported flat headline earnings of R688m, solid headline earnings growth for Wealth and Investment Management (11), Short-term Insurance (11) and Fiduciary Services (24) were offset by Life insurance earnings and a loss after tax in the Distribution business. fx Africa has further built out the strength of its management team over the past six months and is investing in talent retention. Maria Ramos concludes: By the end of the year I expect that we will have made further progress in the turnaround of our Retail and Business Banking business with a particular focus on our business banking franchise. We will also have significantly advanced the roll-out of our corporate business and completed our next phase of expanding our insurance business into East Africa. If we continue to execute well on our stated priorities, I have no doubt that we will become the Go-To Bank in Africa the destination of choice for customers and clients. fx Africa is seeking high calibre candidates with post graduate degrees to join its exciting Pan African Graduate Development Programme (PAGDP) in 2017. The banks impressive performance is underpinned by numerous initiatives, including significant enhancement of customer service experience as well as improved operational efficiencies and control environment. fx today announced the launch of its intelligent cash depositing ATMs providing Botswana customers with more ways to bank outside a banking hall. The banks new generation machines, are optimized for simple cash deposit transactions. The cash machines, whose operation was demonstrated during the launch event, have been designed to be user-friendly with clear, easy-to-read screens, keypads and short steps. The advent of these machines means that customers do not need to go to the branch to make deposits. We are excited to give our customers choice and convenience of banking options. Our real time cash deposit at the ATM facility signifies our desire to enhance our customers banking experience and the demonstration from today is a culmination of many months of hard work of testing and calibrating for perfect, seamless process, said fx MD, Reinette Van Der Merwe. fx is currently working on various initiatives meant to drive superior customer experience and create opportunities for colleagues to delight customers and clients especially through digital migration. The real time cash deposit on ATM is just one of the many initiatives that will be rolled out by the bank in the quest to be the Go-To bank in this market. Over the last few years, the bank has beefed up its investment in technology and has revamped its technology-based banking and is currently installing intelligent automated teller machines (ATMs) to manage costs and increase efficiency. Following the recent launch of their SME banking solution, fx Bank of Botswana made its presence felt when they partnered with a commercial farming community in the Barolong Farms where they are sponsoring Mosisedi 2017 Harvest Day. Commenting on the partnership, fx Head of SME, Keletso Setimela said the banks participation in and collaboration with the farming community goes beyond just banking, but addresses the social needs of farmers. Mosisedi Farmers Association comprises a group of farmers who are engaged in large scale dry-land crop production for cereals. fx is not just a bank, our legacy in Botswana stretches for more than six decades as we are now a part of the social fabric of Batswana. Our vision is to be the Go-To bank, and what this means is when a farmer wakes up and wants financial solutions, they must think fx, said Keletso, adding that the merger between fx and Absa will greatly support the realisation of this banking solution. He said: Through the One Africa strategy we have a competitive edge because we will tap into the expertise and capability to solve all the complex issues that may be associated with SME agric sector. When launching the new product two weeks back, Minister of Trade and Industry, Dorcas Makgato-Malesu commended fx for taking the initiative to reach out to SMEs. The Minister reiterated the banks legacy and its association with Batswana as dating way back to the times the bank used to deliver its banking services through a lorry in Tswapong. fx commitment to the SME is not in doubt. Even when they did not have a fully-fledged sector they continued to offer banking solutions to this sector through their Local Business proposition, she revealed. fx SME Customer Value Proposition is based on solving the financial needs of SMEs through a comprehensive suite of solutions as well as building valued relationships with SMEs by giving them genuine value from the banks products. Through the banks robust Citizenship agenda, beneficiaries of SME funding will also receive financial education to enhance financial management skills. Employees at fx Bank believe that helping the underprivileged in their time of need is a fulfilling exercise. Recently, the banks Contact Centre team raised funds and donated toiletries to children at Gamodubu Child Care Centre. The team further donated clothing items to show love and support to the children. The relationship between fx Customer Service team and the Centre dates as far back as 2007 when the team provided a jungle gym and swings facility to promote fun and play for the less fortunate children. They also planted fruit trees which have matured and now supplement diet for Gamodubu community. The Deputy Chief Operating Officer at the bank, Ediretse Ramahobo said fx has strong citizenship agenda. We play a significant role in the socio-economic development of this through our Corporate Social Investment and Citizenship agenda. As a development partner, we have to continuously ensure that the communities within which we operate thrive and develop. Our commitment to the broader society is demonstrated by our continued participation in, and contribution to, sustainable projects and programmes that change the lives of the underprivileged members of our communities. The Gamodubu centre was established in 2004 and has a compliment of more than 200 children with age ranges from 3 months to 16 years. The main aim of the centre is to alleviate poverty through the provision of shelter, food, clothes to homeless children and to provide them with basic necessities such as transportation to school and access to medical facilities when the need arises. The centre relies entirely on donations from corporate companies, individuals and volunteers to finance their daily needs. Money is for big people, children dont have to worry too much about it. Such is the perception that many school going children have about money. Older children including young teenagers feel intimidated by banking halls believing that it is reserved for adults. fx Bank of Botswana believes that it is important to break this perception and educate young children about money, financial responsibility and their positive development in a fun and interactive way. fx bank, in partnership with Stepping Stones International (SSI) in Mochudi began an innovative partnership to take the world of money and finance to children at 10 schools across Botswana. Aflateen is an exciting interactive program that is designed to develop children and youth to become conscientious, responsible adults. It gives them exposure to Social and Financial Enterprise Saving and Spending Planning and Budgeting Personal Understanding and Exploration and Rights and Responsibilities. The project will serve as a pilot for school-based Aflateen programming, Yodit Molosi, fx Community Relations Manager revealed. She said the implementation of the program will include the training of two teachers from each school who will then launch the program in their respective schools. Aflateen clubs will be established at each school with the supervision and guidance of the teachers and the support of fx employees who will also receive training on the program. Training began late January with Mahalapye JSS, Molepolole JSS and Palapye JCSS, and in February teachers from Bokamoso JSS, Tlhomo JSS, Artesia JSS were trained. The programme will continue in Francistown next week together with the remaining schools being Kgosi Mpe JSS, Setlakgosi JSS, Maun Secondary School, Makhubu JSS and Moeng College, she added. According to her, the Ministry of Education and Skills Development is considering the programme for inclusion in the national curriculum, which she said would potentially benefit all school-going youth in the country. Stepping Stones International is a not for profit entity that offers youth, in their most difficult years, the opportunity to gain a new perspective on their lives and harness their true potential in addition to reducing the cycle of poverty. Through an innovative after school and community outreach programme SSI youth have attained essential skills to survive and thrive in even the most challenging circumstances. The SSI approach is unique in Botswana as there are no other programmes of its kind targeting youth ages 12-18 years and above in a holistic manner. fx Bank of Botswana and SSI have been in partnership since 2009. It is quite a distance from the bustling Mochudi village centre to the home of Bakgatla Bolokang Matshelo, otherwise known as BBM. But the distance does not deter the youth in Mochudi from making the trek to attend the weekly training program. The programme focuses on Employment, Vocational and Entrepreneurship skills known as EVE, which is being sponsored by fx Bank of Botswana to the tune of P405, 000. This week, BBM launched the first training which will cover values, self-confidence, goal setting, letter writing, CV development, career guidance and money management. As part of their involvement in the communities within which they operate, fx employees in Mochudi have agreed to provide money management training to the young people enrolled in the programme. Our vision is to be the Go-To bank and fx is excited to have formed this partnership with the Bakgatla community. We will be training close to 150 young people, who will in turn create employment opportunities for other young people in the country, Racheal Mushaike, fx Head of Marketing and Communication revealed. She mentioned that fx and BBM have a long standing relationship through the banks annual Make a Difference Day activity, where the youth have been exposed to life skills training and basic life necessities that included provision of gardens, hygiene facilities and shelter. Last week more than 100 young people gathered in Mochudi to discuss issues of enterprise development and share experiences in running their individual enterprises. As a development partner fx was privileged to address them and share the banks vision and strategy for the youth in Botswana, explained Yodit Molosi, BBB Community Relations Manager. Scores of young people from Mochudi between 18 and 35 years will benefit from Project EVE whose main goal is to improve the quality of life of youth through employment training, vocational skills development and entrepreneurial training in the District. The programme allows youth to choose how they best see themselves building financially independent and productive lives. BBM Coordinator, Ms. Stella Raphoto commended fx for the encouragement they offer young people, adding that the efforts will go a long way in complementing government efforts to create employment for them. The young people have expressed interest in learning about brick laying, plumbing, electrician under vocational studies working as shop assistants, petrol attendants, beauticians and housekeepers in hotels under employment and developing businesses in poultry, horticulture, health gymnasiums and recycling oil. We have established other strategic partnerships to ensure the success of the program. We will be working with the University of Botswana Business Clinic to provide the enterprise sessions. Local Enterprise Authority (LEA) has agreed to provide mentoring services to them, whilst the Construction Industry Trust Fund and Madirelo will provide the vocational training, said the Coordinator. She further revealed that they have started engaging other stakeholders to consider providing employment to the youth after they have completed their job-readiness training. Corridors at fx house were filled to capacity last week as school children gathered to learn about the world of finance and money. In collaboration with schools in the capital Gaborone, the bank hosted 60 children to commemorate Global Money Week. Global Money Week is an internationally recognised week set aside to teach children and youth about money, enterprise, employability and livelihood. We are a bank that has the greatest legacy in Botswana, as evidenced by our wide footprint of 43 branches and 114 ATMs across the entire country, ensuring we bank the unbanked members of our society, said Kgotso Bannalotlhe, Country Treasurer. Children from three different schools in Gaborone visited the banks Head Office and its Processing Centre to learn more about money and how it applies to their lives on a daily basis. The also appreciated the various professions within the banking sector as a way to unlock their early career paths. The Global Money Week focuses on providing children with critical aspects of money management. Equally important is how we help young people start an early preparation of shaping their future. As an institution that invest in its people by nurturing and managing talent, we went further to engage the children in career discussions and allowed them to appreciate what happens in the human resources, treasury, Corporate and Change departments, explained Kgotso. Global Money Week was first celebrated by fx in 2017 when the banks employees visited various schools to impart money management skills. Scores of young university students received training over the past weekend on the importance of having a healthy relationship with money. During a presentation led by fx, Consumer Credit Director, Fergus Ferguson fx employees provided young men and women with a lesson on effective money management. Live within your means and dont feel obliged to follow your peers when they indulge in items that they cannot afford. Also remember that your partner is not a source of income it is their money not yours. There is nothing more liberating than financial independence said Fergus. Nurture it, cherish it and grow it were words echoed by the team who thronged University of Botswana at the invitation of the African Women Leadership Academy during the commemoration of the International Womens Day. Kushata Chilisa and Mpho Tlhong reviewed key issues around savings, interest and insurance and emphasized the need to start saving from an early age to establish the initial stages of developing a solid and respectable relationship with money. In his conclusion, Fergus said the world remains dependant on women for many things including the prudent management of money, reminding them that Botswana has changed and have moved from a time when everything was freely provided by government including health care, education and land to one where everything has a cost. He advised the young people to ask questions and request information with regard to any facility or loan that they wish to take to ensure that they have a full understanding of what they are signing for. Protect yourself by understanding all the requirements and obligations of entering into an agreement to access a loan. It is absolutely critical. NOT even the wet weather condition nor the power cuts that were experienced in the better part of Gaborone last night could stop the bold brand to unveil a new baby who has been under-wraps for a while now. Ably led by Reinette van der Merwe, MD of fx Bank of Botswana and the leadership team, the bank pulled a curious crowd of over 200 people who were eager to know whats up the banks sleeve with the Small and Medium entrepreneurs. The event was blessed by the Minister of Trade and Industry, Dorcas Makgato-Malesu who commended the bank for the big step in the right direction. The bank has launched a ground-breaking value SME proposition which defines Small businesses as those enterprises with an annual turnover of up to P10 million while Medium businesses are those with an annual turnover of between P10 million to P25 million. Buoyed by the merger with Absa to form the fx Africa Group, the bank believes it has the capacity to roll out a game changer in the local SME business. Across the markets the bank goes under one vision of being the Go-To bank for its customers and clients leveraging the expertise and skill across markets to give Batswana the best banking solutions. MD, Reinette van der Merwe reiterates that the bank can leverage its foot print both locally and regionally to give its hordes of customers the best SME offering ever. She believes that fx, which has a long history in Botswana, can provide the right products that suit the ambitions and needs of all customers and clients. Our mission is to help people achieve their ambitions in the right way and for them to think fx every time they need a banking solution. I am pleased to note that we have established a strong team of qualified people who will manage our SME offering in the different sectors of the economy including amongst others commercial agriculture, tourism, business services, oil energy, mining surveying, wholesale retail trade as well as the value chain in these sectors, she said. The core solutions to be provided to the SME customer base are business transactional account, investment and saving products and foreign exchange products. Additional solutions will include vehicle asset finance, working capital loans or overdrafts, trade solutions and fx Integrator which is our internet banking. The SME proposition is a result of extensive and rigorous customer and stakeholder engagement which recommended that the bank should strengthen the Local Business and develop a product that will be tailor-made for the ever evolving needs of the fast-growing small and medium sized enterprises segment in Botswana. fx Bank of Botswana Managing Director, Reinette van der Merwe fx Bank continues to assert itself as the Go-To bank as Botswanas banking landscape experiences growth. This week, the bank launched an affordable and hassle-free card-less money transfer service called Cash Send, which will change the way Batswana bank. fx customers will no longer have to be physically present at banking halls to send or receive money, or to effect some business transactions. Through Cash Send, a customer can transfer amounts between P20. 00 to P4 000 to any location in Botswana. Commenting on the new service, fx Managing Director, Reinette van der Merwe said: We are proud to continue developing products that are relevant to the needs of Batswana. As a responsible corporate citizen, we realise our obligation to ensure we cater for the unbanked population of our society. Cash Send allows fx customers to electronically transfer funds to anyone in Botswana - even someone who doesnt have a bank account-without having to physically go inside a bank. Reinette further explained that this is an important development and a real game changer in the disbursements of funds, considering that it extends the service to individuals without bank accounts. Furthermore, Cash Send is configured to assure security of funds from fraud and theft and privacy of records, as only the sender and recipient will know about the transaction. To use the service, fx customers will need to purchase an electronic Money Voucher at any of the fx ATMs located countrywide through the ATMs more services menu option. In an effort to support government in offering banking solutions to Batswana, fx has since 1990 built the largest footprint of 43 branches and 114 ATMs across the country. The raft race has been an exciting day in our corporate calendar and enjoyed by our colleagues and customers. The excitement of the race starts right from the beginning when teams build their rafts before commencing the actual race. (I think more info is needed on building of rafts.) Some of the organisations that have in the past benefited from this benevolence are BSPCA, Adopt A Child and Sefhare Stimulation Centre. These organisations have once again been selected as beneficiaries for the 2017 edition. The raft race has been in existence since 1986. fx takes pride in the relationships it has formed with various partners over the years in an effort to raise funds for the needy in creative ways. fx Africa Director of Consumer Banking, Rajal Vaidya Seven fx employees flew to Cape Town last week to receive awards following their exceptional performance in 2017. The annual fx Africa Premier League Sales and Service awards recognised over 120 employees this year. Chief Executive of Africa Retail and Business Banking, Craig Bond told the winners that with the superior talent they had demonstrated to get them to the winning position they had achieved, fx Africa was well on its way to becoming the undisputed heavyweight banking champion in Africa. He congratulated all the winners for taking top honours in the annual competition which runs across fx Africa Retail Banking. We are at the start of an exciting journey to change the game through innovation in our refreshed distribution platforms and excellent product segments, said Bond. fx Africa Director of Consumer Banking, Rajal Vaidya, said he was convinced the award winners were part of the team that would change the shape of banking in Africa. While the event is mainly about recognising people who have been working extra hard in the past 12 months, its also about determining how we can, as a team, build a strong pan African bank on the continent. fx Bank of Botswana Head of Sales - Cards, Tebogo Direng said winners from Botswana came from Broadhurst, Jwaneng, Industrial, Carbo and Lead Generation centre. These awards were inaugurated last year to drive performance not only in the sales front, but also in the customer service space for our employees. For us in Botswana it has created excitement among employees as they all want to get the opportunity to be recognised at Africa level, and we believe it will create good motivation for them to deliver good performance this year and beyond, she said. At the event, employees had the opportunity to listen to former Chelsea captain and France international player, Marcel Desailly, who was a special guest at the awards gala dinner. Marcel talked to employees about his football career and how his experience in football was relevant to any career, including banking. Fielding a wide range of questions from renowned soccer analyst Thomas Mlambo, Desailly spoke about his journey from Ghana as a four-year-old into France where he discovered his soccer skills and the challenge of choosing which national colours to wear at international level. Desailly spoke about his major highlights such as being part of Frances football teams that won the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000. He also shared some lowlights in his career and how perseverance led to what he considered a successful football career. He had this to say to fx employees: While football can be individual in the sense that it brings differently skilled individuals, ultimately it is about bringing the individuals together to play as a team. You perform well as a collective and not as an individual. Desailly is a retired Ghanaian born French footballer and was star of the France national football team which won the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000. He also won the UEFA Champions League with French club Olympique de Marseille in 1993 and again in 1994 while playing for Italian side AC Milan. Following his move to Chelsea in 1998, Desailly captained the English side and played sweeper and centre-back until the end of the 2003-04 season. The awards were set up in 2017 to recognise colleagues from across Africa for their outstanding achievements and strong performance during the year, across seven specific categories in each country. Through a unique football themed recognition programme, the awards leveraged sponsorship of the fx Premier League. A highly competitive character, Goitsemodimo said she made a plan to tackle the challenge head on by focusing on one product which she believes was the most challenging amongst the category of products for the challenge. I realised that my peers would go for the easiest and fast selling products, and my strategy was to take the one that challenges more. binary option loan is designed to make the lives of our customers much easier, it meets their day to day needs and I trusted it could increase my chances of winning, she shared. She praised fx for motivating employees through the campaigns, adding that they bring in a platform for healthy competition at the same time lifting business performance. It is also an opportunity for us to up our game around customer service whilst we master the products we offer our customers. Gaborone, Botswana: This past week saw fx Bank of Botswana unveil its support for the Maitisong Festival, which is currently running from April 13th to 25th at the Maitisong Theatre at Maru a Pula School. This support comes in the form of the sponsorship of one of the theatre productions that will be on show during the festival, aptly titled Pula Money Matters. Pula Money Matters is a play which aims to educate the nation on issues on financial literacy and money management. The play is currently running, from the 13th and 18th, and from the 22nd to the 25th of April, all at 1930hrs. The play is titled after our national currency, of course, but the title is also derived from the subject of the play which is teaching people about money matters. We are truly appreciative of our partnership with fx on the project, through which Batswana can be both entertained and taught about pertinent issues such as money matters, commented the Director of Maitisong, Mr Gao Lemmenyane. The play will at a later stage be rolled out at various villages across Botswana, following the fx footprint, an aspect which fx are particularly excited about. Through this road show villages such as Molepolole, Kanye, Serowe, Palapye, Francistown, Kasane and Maun will get to enjoy the play at dates that will later be announced. Access to information on banking and finance remains a challenge in some parts of the country, and through orthodox and unorthodox avenues such as this play, information will be dispersed. It is a big deal for us as through such initiatives we continue to complement the work and the service we provide through our national network of 43 branches and 101 ATMs, said the Acting Head of Corporate Affairs for the Bank, Ms Grace Mosinyi. The play is testament to fx Banks commitment to being the go to bank on issues of finance and banking, by offering relevant and tailor-made financial solutions to the communities they serve. Majority of employees at fx are women and we continue to accord them the respect they deserve. Catherine Letegele-Letebele, CEO of Botswana Life related the story of how she made it to the top. Catherine is a person with disability, she told the audience that she grew up in this condition after suffering polio at a very young age. Her touching testimony is made painful by the fact that the society was always more focused on the fact that she is disabled and pre-judged her ability to do things like normal human beings. Through perseverance and family support, she fought her way up and landed herself in the CEO position. It is still tough, challenging but I manage with determination. In the male dominated insurance business, I sometimes find myself alone among my male counterparts, I have to consistently show that I am equally empowered to make decisions, ague and defend what I believe is a good point, she asserted. Pinkie Setlalekgosi is the founder and director of Sprint Couriers. She started from humble beginnings, from a hotel receptionist to a powerful business woman who admits she works 247 to make her business what it is now. She has not only dominated the courier business in Botswana, but has also opened offices in the Southern African region. Pinkie is a woman who hardly minces her words, she told the audience that her upbringing is the reason for her success. Pinkie is an off shoot of a very strong family structure which she said is known for hard work. My mother taught me that if you sleep, you will not make it in life. In this business, I get calls at odd hours and I have to wake up and move. Being a hard worker, I expect my staff to follow suit, and I make it clear to my workers that its either they invest their time and energy in the business or they are out. I respect my customer because they are the reason I am in business and for me this is the secret behind any successful business, she shared. In recapping the discussion Kebabonye Ntsabane, Gender Links Botswana Country Coordinator gave insights and accounts of sad stories happening to women every day in Botswana.
